Here I am before 8:30

Soaking wet and sittig high and dry on a mud flat! I do have beer, a cigar, and my blackberry lol.  So things could be worse!  Stay tuned for more exciting updates.

Oh yeah I see fish in the distance, but the bottom is mud

Last night, my wife and I attended the Fly Fishing Film Series.   It was a great time and somewhat of payback for my wife for taking me to Twilight movies.  So, I get super pumped last night to get out fly fishing this morning.  Super cold or not!  By myself I am going!!  Especially, after my trip with Dad the day before. I get to the ramp about 7am and its cold!  I am wearing long johns, jeans, long sleeve shirt, tennis shoes, a sweatshirt and still somewhat cold.  Its outgoing tide still getting to almost low.  I take off to my spot, which is a mud flat near JTB with my 9 wt and 7wt..  Next to the mud flats, there is a deeper creek that runs under JTB, so I figured I would fish the creek until the tide starts to come in.

I go across the mud flat using the trolling motor knowing that certain areas are deeper than others, somewhat of a channel.  I am in the channel for the most part of it and take a bending right with the channel.  However, I soon realized my bend was now outside of the channel.  My trolling motor gets stuck in the mud, so I pull it out.  Grab the push pole and start pushing like hell to get unstuck.  Now push poling in mud sucks, since the foot does not find hard bottom until about 2 feet deep in the mud!  People down south are lucky with hard bottoms.  I Know I need to get back in the channel and fast!  So, I am really leaning on the push pole trying to the mud vacuum broken from the boat.  I have all my weight on the push pole,  My foot slips!   I fall in backwards!  So, my feet are still in the boat, and my hands are grabbing the gunnel between them for a split second.  It probably looked like I was going #2 in the water!  lol  Then, in I go into 6 inches of cold mud water, just flat on my back! I quickly stand up and get back in the boat.  Mud is everywhere, its cold, and everything I brought is soaked!  I ditch my shoes, socks, jeans, sweatshirt, and change out of my wet boxers.  So, now I am wearing my camo long johns and a long sleeve t-shirt!

At this point, all the water is nearly gone and the boat wont budge!  At this point, I know that two firsts happened today at once for me!  I fell out of my boat and got stuck high and dry.  So, i kicked back and tried to warm up, by having a few beers, smoking a cigar, and listening to the radio.

Thanks, to the other boat that came by and let me use some of their sunscreen.   They didn't even laugh at my situation either! :)

That is an incredible, remarkable fishing outing! and what self restraint! Imagine if it had happened to Mike Iaconeli ! Sorry you went through all that alone!

What? no camera?

Stories like this make me feel better about not having a boat.  Yet, next time I watch a fly fishing show and see people going out to great flats waters to catch reds, I will have to return back to this post.

Sorry for the fun, but at least other than your dignity, you did not get hurt nor your boat.

Well Ryan,

Doesn't sound like a real fun trip, but at least you have a nice picture to remind you of it. Not many people have pictures of themselves fly casting in their long johns, especially in the Sunshine State! ;D ;D

Cheers,
Jim
