Where would you put the Hook keeper

If you were designing the perfect fly rod, where would you locate the fly/hook keeper ?

Great question!  IMHO, its a must have also.

I typically do not have much problems with the "regular" location, but I have heard many do.

I don't use one because I want my leader totally clear of the guides to facilitate getting the cast off quickly. The leader is usually longer than the rod which will leave a knot or two, the biggest ones, still inside the smallest guides of the tip section which requires extra care to get them out when one wants to cast. So I catch the fly on the stripping guide foot and loop the leader back around the reel and then to the tip top. Ready for quick deployment whether fresh or saltwater use.

I was thinking more for storage when the rod is broken down, not while on the water fishing.. agree the leader is longer than the rod.

Question is more for the long time fly fisher-persons.. (not me I'm new), if your rod has one and the location has always bothered you why and where you you put one if you had the choice ???

I prefer not having one.  typically when I'm not using the rod I loop the leader around the reel and up to the second stripper.  This leaves a little of the fly line out of the rod tip making it easier to start the next cast.  When I'm breaking the rod down I reel the fly up to the tip and disconnect the center ferrel, then put the rod back into it's a double hard case.  Ready for the next trip...............
